The Tamil Nadu government has filed an appeal in the Supreme Court challenging an order of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court that set aside government job appointments granted to families of those who died in the Karur crowd crush.
The appointments were issued by the state government for the families of victims who died after being caught in a stampede during a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam campaign meeting in Karur. The orders were issued by Chief Minister Vijay.
Public interest petitions were filed before the Madurai Bench by Naam Tamilar Katchi functionary Dheeran Thirumurugan of Madurai, along with separate petitions by Manithaneya Jananayaga Katchi state deputy secretary Seeni Ahmed, and Santhosh Kumar of Vadamadurai in Dindigul district.
A division bench comprising Justices C.V. Karthikeyan and R. Sakthivel quashed the appointments and observed that the government could have supported the affected families through skill development training, which it said could be more useful than providing jobs.
In its appeal, the state has argued that courts should not interfere in policy decisions of the government and has sought to set aside the Madurai Bench order.
