Bengaluru: Pro-Kannada organisations have announced a statewide shutdown in Karnataka on August 13, protesting the directive to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.
Tamil Nadu has said it did not receive the Cauvery water due for June and July, affecting farming in delta districts and reducing groundwater availability.
At a meeting of the Cauvery Regulation Committee on July 28, Karnataka was directed to release 3,500 cubic feet per second (cusecs) of water to Tamil Nadu. However, Karnataka did not comply with the order, according to the report.
After a consultation meeting in Bengaluru, the groups issued the bandh call. Kannada Chalavali organisation leader Vatal Nagaraj told reporters the shutdown would be observed from 6 am to 6 pm on August 13, and said they would also protest if Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay visits Bengaluru.
