Delhi Police have begun using AI-powered smart glasses to identify suspects in public gatherings, recently deploying them during a protest at Jantar Mantar. Officers said the device helped flag more than 2,500 participants with a criminal background.
The glasses, which some onlookers mistook for consumer smart eyewear, are not Meta Ray-Bans. They are a custom-made AI smart-glasses system developed in India for the police and manufactured by Mumbai-based Ajnalens.
According to the report, the device scans a person’s face the moment an officer looks at them and compares it within milliseconds against a stored database of around 65,000 records. If the face matches images of known offenders or wanted persons, the system alerts the officer.
Police say the glasses are particularly useful in crowded public spaces, enabling quick face checks against criminal records without needing an internet connection.
The system operates under monitoring by software called “Jarvis,” developed by an AI research firm in Gurugram. The same software is linked with CCTV cameras in public areas of Delhi and is designed to scan faces, vehicles and crowds; it was earlier developed with Rajasthan’s Alwar police to digitise crime records and assist in tracing missing persons.
