New Delhi has strongly objected to a report by the US daily The New York Times for describing Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) as “Pakistan Kashmir”. The government said such wording misrepresents India’s position on the region.
Addressing reporters in Delhi, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh are an inseparable part of India. He added that these areas have been, and will remain, Indian territory.
Jaiswal said countries, international organisations and media outlets should use the correct names for the region in a manner that reflects India’s stated position.
Earlier, the Indian Embassy in the United States also condemned the newspaper’s headline, calling it completely incorrect and misleading about the status of the territory. The embassy said there is no region called “Pakistan Kashmir” and described the area as Kashmir illegally occupied by Pakistan.
The embassy further asserted that the territory belongs to India and accused Pakistan of fomenting violence in the illegally occupied region.
