Pakistan has said it will formally invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit scheduled to be held in Islamabad next year.
The SCO was established in 2001 in Beijing to strengthen security, economic and trade cooperation among countries across Europe and Asia. The grouping has 10 member states, including India, China, Pakistan, Russia and Iran.
According to Pakistan, the summit will be hosted by the country next year under the organisation’s rotational arrangement, and invitations will be sent to leaders of all member nations.
Pakistan’s Foreign Office said that, under SCO procedures, it is the host country’s responsibility to invite every member state. In that context, India will also be invited, and a formal invitation will be extended to PM Modi.
The summit is expected to take place in Islamabad, with Pakistan preparing to host leaders from across the bloc.
