A woman assistant engineer at a power distribution office near Tharamangalam in Salem district was arrested by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) police for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 7,000 for an electricity connection.
Police identified the accused as Kavitha (43), an assistant engineer at the K.R. Thoppur power distribution office. A rope-twisting worker had approached her seeking an electricity connection for his shed.
According to the complaint, the engineer demanded Rs 7,000 to process the connection. Unwilling to pay, the worker approached the Salem DVAC and lodged a complaint.
Following DVAC instructions, the complainant handed over the money at the power office. As the engineer allegedly received the cash, a team led by Inspector Nallammal, who had been waiting nearby, detained and arrested her.
