Chennai: Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) chief coordinator Seeman has questioned how electricity bills for many households in Tamil Nadu have reportedly risen up to four times compared to usual, even after the government announced free electricity up to 200 units.
In a statement, he said the sharp increase has shocked the public and is contrary to the promise of free units. He alleged that the situation warrants strong condemnation as consumers are receiving bills far higher than normal.
Seeman said affected residents are blaming delayed meter readings and inaction on complaints about faulty meters, attributing these factors to the spike in billing. He also raised a suspicion that readings may have been intentionally delayed so that consumers would not receive the benefit of the free 200 units.
According to his statement, delayed readings could push recorded consumption beyond 500 units, resulting in the loss of the free-unit benefit and a higher per-unit tariff. He further alleged that while the election promise spoke of 200 free units per month, the announcement later limited it to 200 units for two months and only for consumers using up to 500 units.
He demanded that the increased charges for those affected by billing irregularities be fully waived and called on the government to immediately issue an order implementing 200 units of free electricity per month as promised.
