A passenger ship in Indonesia caught fire, leaving five people dead and 41 missing, according to officials.
The vessel was travelling from Surabaya in East Java—described as the country’s largest city—to Makassar in South Sulawesi with 271 people on board. The fire broke out near the Madura Island area, and the ship’s captain alerted authorities.
Emergency rescue teams were deployed immediately, and people on a nearby ship also joined the operation. Several passengers were rescued during the response.
Authorities said the search for the missing is ongoing. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
