Heavy monsoon rains have caused widespread disruption across eight districts in Kerala, with authorities confirming eight deaths so far. Rescue teams are continuing search operations to trace eight people reported missing.
With inflow rising steadily, surplus water was released from the Mangalam dam through six shutters as a safety measure. Officials said the discharge could be increased further depending on the inflow.
The worst impact has been reported from districts including Kollam, Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Idukki and Malappuram. The state has also reported 13 people injured.
Chief Minister Satheesan said cleaning work has begun in flood-affected areas and urged political workers and volunteer organisations to join the effort, assuring full government support. He said 5,792 people have been moved to 209 relief camps, while 27 houses have collapsed completely.
The Chief Minister also called for continued monitoring in hilly regions and said arrangements are in place to respond to any emergency even if rainfall reduces. Residents in hill areas were advised to remain alert and cautious.
