Heavy southwest monsoon rain has intensified across Kerala, triggering landslides and flooding in multiple districts, including Idukki and Kottayam. Officials have stepped up search operations after several people were reported missing.
In Idukki district, a pre-dawn landslide at Adoor Mala sent rocks and mud crashing onto a house, killing Sumathi (65). Her husband Ravi and son Ratheesh survived the incident.
Another landslide struck a house in the Vagamon area of Idukki, killing Prabhakaran Nair (77). He was a native of Kottayam district and died while sleeping at a relative’s home.
In Kottayam’s Poonjar pine plantation area, a landslide left Regina Jani (46) and her son Josephine (24) dead after they were trapped under debris. Flooding has also disrupted daily life, with roads cut off and traffic affected in several locations.
Authorities reported damage to a parked police vehicle in Upputhara. A low-level bridge at Kokkayar was submerged due to swelling in the Pullakkayar river, while landslides blocked the Kattappana–Valuvara road and severed connectivity in the Nellimala area. Flood impacts were also reported from Erattupetta, Kanjirappally, Koottickal and Erumeli, with additional flooding and minor landslides noted in Pathanamthitta, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Kannur and Palakkad.
