A fatal road accident was reported on the Pollachi–Udumalai National Highway in Coimbatore district, where a car rammed into a lorry, leaving five people dead.
Police said workers were watering plants on the centre median near Thippampatti on the Pollachi–Udumalai main road. A water lorry had been parked at the spot for the work.
During this time, a car travelling from Udumalai towards Coimbatore allegedly hit the rear of the parked lorry. Three women and two men died at the scene.
The deceased have been identified as Kanagaraj of MLA Street near Madukkarai Market in Coimbatore district, his wife Poorani, and their daughters Narmatha and Aarthi. Efforts are under way to identify the fifth victim.
Police recovered the bodies and sent them to the Pollachi Government Hospital for post-mortem examination. An inquiry is in progress.
