Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is currently taking refuge in India, is set to deliver a public address on August 5 in New Delhi. The speech will be her first appearance in a public forum in nearly two years.
Hasina came to India on August 5, 2024, amid student protests in Bangladesh. Multiple cases have been filed against her in Bangladesh, and she has reportedly been awarded a death sentence in one of the cases.
In a recent interview, Hasina said she intends to return to Bangladesh without fearing for her life, and that she is consulting party functionaries about returning by the end of this year.
The upcoming address will be delivered online at an event organised by the South Asian Foreign Correspondents’ Association. The programme is scheduled from 6 pm to 7.30 pm at the Sir Mark Tully Auditorium on Mathura Road in Delhi.
Her son Sajeeb Wajed Joy is expected to attend in person. Former minister Muhibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, cricketer Shakib Al Hasan, writer Abu Obaida Arin and others are also slated to participate.
