Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Revenue Department has said that patta name transfer through the online system can now be completed within a week of deed registration, following steps to reduce delays.
In Tamil Nadu, buyers of houses or plots can apply for patta name change at the time of registering the sale deed. A scheme launched in 2020 enables automatic patta transfer in cases where no survey sub-division is required.
Under the process, Aadhaar details of the seller and buyer are verified and the Sub-Registrar’s approval is obtained. The registration details are then sent from the Registration Department’s portal to the Revenue Department’s “Tamil Nilam” platform.
Earlier, approvals were required at multiple levels, and interventions by the Village Administrative Officer and Revenue Inspector were cited as reasons for delays. After complaints, discussions were held at the ministerial level involving the Revenue, Registration and Information Technology departments, leading to a reduction in verification stages from four to two.
Officials said files approved by the Sub-Registrar will now go directly to the zonal Deputy Tahsildar at the taluk office, and once approved, the patta name change will be completed. Applicants receive an SMS notification after the transfer, and the department is considering ways to send the updated patta copy as a next step.
