Tamil Nadu has approached the Supreme Court on the Cauvery river water dispute and the Mekedatu dam issue, seeking directions to Karnataka to release water to the state.
Chief Minister Vijay had planned to meet Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar in Bengaluru on August 3 to hold talks. A letter had been sent and consent for the meeting was received, according to the report.
However, D.K. Shivakumar reportedly advised that the visit be avoided due to an unfavourable situation. Following this, the Tamil Nadu government filed a petition in the Supreme Court on August 3 urging the court to direct Karnataka to release Tamil Nadu’s due share.
In its petition, Tamil Nadu said an order had been issued to release water at the rate of 3,500 cusecs for 15 days. It also stated that Karnataka’s reservoirs hold a total storage of 77.537 TMC and that there would be no difficulty in supplying water to Tamil Nadu.
Tamil Nadu further said Karnataka should have released 26.954 TMC and sought directions for timely release. The matter is expected to come up for hearing soon.
