Kolkata: A terror suspect arrested in West Bengal allegedly planned attacks in Delhi and had infiltrated the NEET protest at Jantar Mantar by wearing a police uniform, investigators said.
The case surfaced after inputs suggested an attempt to kidnap the son of a senior BJP functionary in West Bengal. During the probe, the social media accounts of a young woman from Jharkhand, identified as Abita Sarkar, were placed under surveillance, leading to the arrest of Hameem Mondal in Kolkata by a special task force.
Based on Mondal’s statements, Abita Sarkar was also arrested. Investigators said the duo was involved in “honey trap” operations aimed at luring prominent people and their sons and cheating them.
The special task force said Mondal is linked to the banned Pakistan-based terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed and was acting under the guidance of Pakistan’s ISI. IG Gaurav Sharma said Mondal’s objective at the NEET protest was to provoke violence and disrupt law and order, and that he had also planned attacks on senior police officers and political leaders.
Officials added that Mondal had allegedly been planning to target BJP leaders, including Suvendu Adhikari, and that further investigation is under way.
