Tamil Nadu government informed the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court that bike taxi services are not permitted in the state until a formal policy decision is taken.
The submission was made during the hearing of a public interest petition filed by Madurai-based advocate Naveenkumar, who sought permission for bike taxis in Tamil Nadu. The matter was heard by a bench comprising Justices C.V. Karthikeyan and R. Sakthivel.
Appearing for the state, the Additional Advocate General said the government has to constitute a committee and arrive at a policy decision on bike taxis. Until that decision is made, operating bike taxis would not be allowed, and those who run them in violation would face fines.
The judges questioned why the absence of permission should not be publicised so that people are aware, and also raised concerns about accountability in case of accidents. The bench asked the state to take a policy decision soon on whether it will permit bike taxis or not.
