Washington: US President Donald Trump said ceasefire negotiations with Iran will resume at midnight, with mediators present.
The announcement comes after the earlier ceasefire collapsed and the United States intensified its military actions against Iran. Trump had also warned of a strong response following an attack last week on a US military base in Jordan.
Trump had previously said fresh military strikes on Iran were being temporarily halted in response to appeals from West Asian countries, adding that a draft peace agreement was being prepared.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said he wants an agreement and that the US is ready for talks. He added that he does not want more deaths, warning that many lives could be lost if the conflict escalates.
He said the pause in attacks was made at the request of friendly nations such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. Trump also indicated that an agreement related to the Strait of Hormuz would be pursued first, followed by a deal on eliminating Iran’s nuclear weapons capability.
