A startling banking incident has been reported from West Bengal after a woman found an unusually massive sum credited to her account while checking for an LPG cylinder subsidy.
The woman, Kashmira Sheikh, is from Kultali in South 24 Parganas district and works in zari embroidery. Coming from a poor family, she visited her Punjab National Bank branch to confirm whether her gas subsidy had been credited.
When bank staff checked her balance, the account reportedly showed ₹99,99,99,997—just ₹3 short of ₹100 crore. The unexpected figure left her shocked and prompted immediate attention from bank officials.
Senior bank authorities subsequently froze the account. Officials suspect the credit may have been made by mistake and said an investigation is under way to determine how the amount was deposited.
