Two more appeals have been filed in the Supreme Court challenging an order of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court that cancelled government job appointment orders issued to the families of those who died in the Karur stampede.
The incident occurred on September 27 last year at Velusamipuram in Karur district during a campaign event addressed by TVK leader and current Chief Minister Vijay. A total of 41 people died in the crowd crush.
On July 10, the Chief Minister handed over government orders for compassionate appointments to the families of the deceased at an event held in Karur. The appointments were later challenged before the Madurai Bench.
A division bench comprising Justices C.V. Karthikeyan and R. Sakthivel held that government jobs cannot be granted as a “gift” or as compassionate relief after a tragic incident, and set aside the appointment orders.
The Tamil Nadu government has already moved the Supreme Court, arguing that the appointments were part of a state policy decision and that the court should not interfere. Separately, Prabhakaran Selvakumar and B. Anand Jothi have now filed individual appeals, which are expected to be listed along with the state’s petition soon.
