Chennai Police have arrested Parangimalai Inspector Buhari following a complaint that he extorted money from a businessman by issuing threats linked to a high-profile murder probe.
The complainant, Akhilkumar (35) of Old Washermenpet, who is engaged in share market-related work, told the Police Commissioner’s office that he was threatened with being added as an accused in the 2024 murder case of Armstrong, who was then the Tamil Nadu state president of the Bahujan Samaj Party.
According to the complaint, the inspector allegedly said a mobile number used by an accused named Krishnan was registered in Akhilkumar’s name, and used this to pressure him. Akhilkumar stated he had provided a SIM card to Krishnan in 2018 on request, but maintained he had no connection to the case.
The businessman alleged that despite his explanation, he was forced to pay Rs 40 lakh and that further amounts were taken over the next two years on various pretexts. He also claimed the inspector recently demanded an additional Rs 5 lakh, threatening arrest in a narcotics case if the money was not paid.
Following the complaint, Police Commissioner Amalraj reportedly moved the inspector to the waiting list on Sunday night. Police later arrested Inspector Buhari in connection with the allegations.
