New Delhi: Members of a parliamentary standing committee questioned Meta officials over the removal of a video posted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Facebook, seeking clarity on accountability and follow-up action.
The issue came up during a meeting in Delhi on August 3, where representatives of Google, Meta, X and Snapchat appeared before the panel to discuss regulation of social media and digital platforms, along with user privacy. Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan and officials from the Ministry of Information Technology also attended.
According to Delhi sources, MPs took a firm stand and asked Meta what action was taken against those responsible for the takedown. Meta officials expressed regret and said the video was removed due to a technical error.
The committee was not satisfied with the explanation, stressing that an apology was not the core issue and that responsibility must be fixed. Several members also pressed for legal action against the Meta officials linked to the removal.
The panel further sought details on what steps Meta has taken regarding objectionable and controversial content on its platform, the sources said.
