A video showing two women dancing to Hindi and Tamil songs inside the corridors of the Ramanathaswamy Temple in Rameswaram has triggered discomfort among devotees, who said the act disrupted the sanctity of the shrine.
The temple has restrictions on carrying mobile phones inside. Photography is officially permitted only in the third corridor, where a private operator has been awarded a tender to take pictures.
However, critics allege that visitors continue to take photos and videos on their phones without being stopped by the temple administration. The latest incident involved two women from Pali in Rajasthan, whose dance video from the temple premises circulated online.
R. Ramamoorthy, Ramanathapuram district president of Hindu Munnani, condemned the trend and said such videos hurt devotees’ sentiments. He also criticised the lack of action by temple security personnel.
He warned that if such incidents continue, temple security and decorum could be compromised, and urged the Tamil Nadu government to take steps to preserve the temple as a place of worship.
