New Delhi: The Union government has issued a strong warning to Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, over an AI-generated defamatory video targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the circulation of obscene videos involving women and children.
The issue comes amid a separate incident in which a selfie video posted by the Prime Minister on his Facebook page—aimed at reassuring youth protesting in Delhi over an alleged question paper leak—was briefly blocked. The Centre criticised the action, while Meta said it was a technical glitch and apologised.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology rejected Meta’s explanation as insufficient and summoned company officials to appear at a high-level meeting in Delhi scheduled for today and tomorrow.
Meanwhile, the Parliamentary committee on communications and information technology warned that platform protections cannot be extended if companies do not operate in line with the Indian Constitution.
BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, who chairs the committee, said on X that Telangana Police have registered a case against Meta over defamatory AI videos related to the Prime Minister and obscene content involving women and children. He also referred to cases filed by Hyderabad Police against Google over alleged financial fraud apps, stating that such platforms would not receive protections under India’s IT law and must remain bound by the Constitution.
