Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the abrogation of Article 370, which had granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir, marked “a new chapter” in history.
Recalling the decision taken on August 5, 2019, Modi noted that Articles 370 and 35A were removed by the Union government. He said the step signalled a fresh phase in the journey of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
In his message, the Prime Minister said the past seven years have seen wide-ranging changes in people’s lives, citing expanded infrastructure and increased opportunities in education, healthcare, entrepreneurship and sports.
He also said that groups who were denied basic constitutional rights for years—including women and marginalised communities—have been empowered with the full implementation of the Indian Constitution.
Modi added that August 5 carries added significance this year as the country marks the 125th birth anniversary year of Dr Syama Prasad Mukherjee, and reiterated a commitment to the progress of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
