Prime Minister Narendra Modi met former Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar at the Parliament complex in New Delhi on Monday, a meeting that has drawn attention in the wake of the Bankipur by-election result.
Bankipur, considered a BJP stronghold in Bihar, went to a bypoll after sitting MLA Nitin Nabin was elected BJP national president and also became a Rajya Sabha MP, necessitating a fresh election in the constituency.
In the by-election, the Jan Suraaj party won the seat, with its candidate Prashant Kishor—known as a prominent election strategist—emerging victorious and taking the constituency from the BJP.
Nitish Kumar, a leader of the BJP’s ally Janata Dal (United) and a Rajya Sabha MP, met the Prime Minister in what he described as a courtesy call at the PM’s office room inside the Parliament complex. Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh and JD(U) national working president and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Kumar Jha were present.
The Bihar BJP later issued a statement saying the leaders discussed contemporary issues in the current situation, and noted that Nitish Kumar’s experience and guidance continue to be a source of encouragement.
