Minister Nirmal Kumar on Thursday criticised the DMK and AIADMK, alleging that both parties are not genuinely concerned about Tamil Nadu’s welfare. Speaking to reporters in Chennai, he questioned what purpose would be served by inviting them for discussions on the Cauvery-related issues.
He said governments typically continue useful schemes from previous administrations while correcting those that did not work. Citing the rural employment programme, he claimed the number of subsidised workdays has been raised from 125 to 150, adding that the government is attempting to deliver what it can within the current financial constraints.
The minister also described the state’s finances as being in a poor condition and said public sector undertakings were left in a weakened state. He referred to the power utility, transport department and Aavin, alleging they were pushed to a point where closure could become a risk.
Responding to criticism that no new revenue sources were created, he said former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami had not taken steps to expand revenue. He also alleged that DMK leaders M.K. Stalin and Udhayanidhi Stalin had not improved revenue sources earlier, and claimed Chief Minister Vijay is now working on financial reforms and revenue augmentation.
On agriculture, he said the Chief Minister is holding consultations on support prices for paddy and sugarcane and will announce decisions after talks with farmers’ associations. On the Cauvery and Mekedatu matters, he said the government will pursue all measures to protect Tamil Nadu’s rights, and that decisions are being taken after consulting alliance partners.
