Kerala Chief Minister Satheesan has said the state is seriously considering holding direct discussions with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay on the Mullaperiyar dam issue.

The Mullaperiyar dam is located in Kerala’s Idukki district near the Tamil Nadu–Kerala border. Built in 1885, the dam’s maintenance is under Tamil Nadu’s control.

Kerala has repeatedly raised concerns about the safety of the century-old structure and has opposed moves to increase the water level. The state has also been demanding that a new dam be built near the existing one.

With recent changes in government in both Tamil Nadu and Kerala, the issue has again drawn attention. Speaking to reporters in Thiruvananthapuram, Satheesan said official-level talks are already underway and that a chief-minister-level meeting, including the possibility of meeting Vijay, is under active consideration.
