Chennai: Tamil Nadu’s outstanding public debt has been estimated at Rs 10.98 lakh crore, according to figures presented in the state budget tabled on August 5.
The state government runs a public distribution system that supplies subsidised food items to ration card holders and also provides a Pongal gift hamper. These benefits have led many households to obtain ration cards.
As per the current status, Tamil Nadu has a total of 2.28 crore ration cards across all categories.
Based on the debt figure and the number of ration cards, the per-family debt burden is calculated at around Rs 4.80 lakh.
