No announcements in the latest budget
The Tamil Nadu government’s budget, presented on Wednesday, did not carry any announcement on the proposed Parandur airport near Chennai, or on the planned airports at Hosur and Rameswaram. Industry circles had been watching for clarity on whether the state would move ahead with Parandur or propose an alternative.
Parandur project remains unclear
Parandur in Kancheepuram district had earlier been identified as the site for Chennai’s second airport, with the proposal announced during the previous DMK regime. The project has already received two clearances from the Union government—site approval and in-principle approval.
Land acquisition halted amid opposition
The project requires acquisition of around 3,000 acres of private land, which drew opposition from some residents. TVK leader Vijay had voiced support for those opposing the land acquisition. After the change in government, the land acquisition process for Parandur was stopped, and there has been no official statement on whether the project will be dropped or revived.
Hosur and Rameswaram proposals also absent
During the DMK tenure, airports were also announced for Hosur in Krishnagiri district and Rameswaram in Ramanathapuram district. With Union approvals pending for both, the next stage did not move forward after the change in administration. The latest budget, however, did not mention these projects or any new airport plans.
