Police questioned opposition leader Udhayanidhi in connection with a controversy over his speech at a DMK protest held in Thanjavur on August 3, linked to the Cauvery and Mekedatu issues.
After a complaint filed by the women’s wing of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) at the Thanjavur East police station, a case was registered against him under nine sections, alleging he spoke in a double-meaning manner.
Udhayanidhi was arrested in Chennai and brought to Thanjavur. While police initially planned to question him at the Thanjavur South police station, he was shifted to the Sengipatti police station after DMK workers allegedly created a commotion in the area.
During the inquiry, police asked him five key questions, including whether he used double meaning, violated protest conditions, or made remarks targeting an individual. Udhayanidhi reportedly replied briefly, stating he did not speak about any individual and did not use double meaning.
Though he was at the station for about one-and-a-half hours, the questioning concluded in around 30 minutes. Police said the case would come up for hearing at the Thanjavur JM-1 court.
