New Delhi: The Union government has issued a firm message to social media platforms, saying they cannot operate in India based on US laws and must comply with Indian legal requirements.
The remarks come amid an ongoing examination of Meta’s platforms, including Instagram and Facebook, over allegations that an official video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi was removed while child sexual content and fake videos were allowed. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has sought an apology in connection with the matter.
A Meta delegation led by its global policy executive Joel Kaplan met Electronics and IT Secretary Krishnan and senior officials on Wednesday, and held talks with Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday.
Government sources said the Meta team is expected to remain in India for a few more days, with three to four meetings likely. Discussions are expected to include issues related to WhatsApp, and officials will assess whether Meta’s services are functioning in line with Indian laws.
The government said the objective is to apply the law in the interest of society, adding that social media platforms—like other companies—carry social and legal responsibilities. Officials also noted that consultations are continuing with major platforms such as Meta, X and Telegram, and that technical data was discussed during the latest meeting.
