Chennai: Prohibition and Excise Minister Vignesh has said there will be no “door delivery” of liquor in Tamil Nadu, amid questions about plans to sell alcohol online.
Speaking to reporters, the minister said the government is preparing a system that allows customers to choose liquor online and pay digitally, but collect the purchase only at TASMAC shops. The move, he said, is aimed at reducing workload for shop staff and easing difficulties linked to cash collection.
Under the proposed method, customers who have paid online can show a QR code at the shop to receive the selected items. The minister said this would help prevent irregular practices such as collecting an extra ₹10 and would also address complaints that some outlets do not stock the brands customers ask for.
He added that liquor sales will not be privatised and prices will not increase. The minister said action is being taken against those who collect extra money per bottle, a practice he claimed has existed since 2011, and questioned the need for home delivery of liquor.
