India’s Parliament has seen repeated disruptions during the ongoing Monsoon Session, which began on July 20 and is scheduled to run until August 13. Proceedings in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha have been frequently stalled due to sustained protests by opposition members.
According to the report, only the amendment bill related to preventing irregularities in general elections was taken up for discussion and passed. Other bills were cleared without debate.
The Union government is said to be keen on passing a constituency delimitation bill linked with the Women’s Reservation Bill, and is also pushing to pass amendments to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) framework. However, opposition MPs have continued their protests, preventing the Houses from functioning.
On Thursday (August 7), disruptions again led to both Houses being adjourned for the entire day. With Saturday and Sunday being holidays, Parliament is set to reconvene on Monday, August 10, at 11 am.
In the Lok Sabha, Speaker Om Birla appealed to protesting opposition MPs to allow the House to function. He urged members to follow parliamentary traditions, saying democracy is strengthened through debate and discussion, and requested them to take their seats and let Question Hour continue.
