The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Union government seeking a detailed response to allegations that medical data of around 1.5 lakh people across India was illegally leaked to Singapore.
The matter was raised through a public interest petition filed by Punjab-based company Vidraya Technologies. The plea claims that sensitive information—including medical test details, diagnosed conditions, prescriptions, addresses and personal identification numbers—was unlawfully transferred to a server located in Singapore.
According to the petitioner, a complaint was submitted to the Punjab Police in March last year, but the investigation has not progressed with the required seriousness. The petition sought directions for the case to be handed over to the CBI.
A bench led by Chief Justice Suryakant, along with Justices Jaymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana, heard the matter. Senior advocate Parameshwar, appearing for the petitioner, told the court the issue was grave and required urgent identification of how and from where the leak occurred, and who was responsible.
The bench directed the Centre to file a comprehensive reply. It also advised the Union government to consider necessary amendments to the Information Technology Act in view of the rising number of cyber crimes, and adjourned the hearing.
