A special resolution seeking a fair distribution of funds to states was moved in the Tamil Nadu Assembly and passed unanimously, with both the DMK and the AIADMK backing it.
Finance Minister Maria Wilson introduced the resolution, urging the Union government to ensure Tamil Nadu receives its due share from taxes collected by the Centre, in line with constitutional principles of fiscal federalism, equality and fairness.
She said the sharing of central taxes should follow a transparent and equitable process that recognises states’ economic contribution, fiscal effort, governance capacity and development needs. The resolution also called for steps to safeguard Tamil Nadu’s legitimate financial interests in future arrangements on tax devolution.
Speaking for the AIADMK, party general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami said the party supported the state government’s resolution and reiterated that Tamil Nadu should not be disadvantaged in the distribution of funds.
DMK MLAs sought amendments to the resolution. DMK MLA Thangam Thennarasu said the text should be revised to ensure a 50% share for states, arguing that reduced central contribution increases the financial burden on the Tamil Nadu government.
