Chennai: TASMAC has begun a survey to identify liquor retail outlets that are causing inconvenience to the public, as part of a move to close or relocate such shops.
Under the 2003 liquor retail sale rules, liquor shops are not permitted within 50 metres of places of worship and educational institutions in corporation and municipal limits, and within 100 metres in other areas. However, several outlets are alleged to be operating without properly adhering to these norms.
Various sections have been urging the government to shut shops located close to homes and at crowded junctions. After Vijay assumed office as Chief Minister in May, he ordered the closure of 717 liquor shops located within 500 metres of places of worship, educational institutions and bus stands.
Those outlets were closed in June. Even so, residents in several areas continue to complain that liquor shops near their homes and schools remain open.
Officials said the ongoing survey will compile details of outlets considered a public nuisance. Once the exercise is completed, the information will be forwarded to the government, following which the identified shops are expected to be closed.
