New Delhi: The Union government has told Meta that it must strictly comply with Indian laws, according to officials.
Meta representatives visiting India have met officials from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Ministry of Communications in multiple rounds of discussions. The government said the focus is on ensuring Meta’s content policies and enforcement guidelines are in line with Indian legal requirements.
Officials stressed that the government expects measurable changes rather than assurances. They also noted that teams based abroad may not fully grasp India’s cultural context, and said Meta needs people with deeper understanding of Indian languages and cultural nuances to improve content review in the country.
On content related to child sexual abuse, the government said there can be no compromise. Allowing such material to remain on Meta platforms would amount to a serious violation, and the company is expected to take firm action.
The officials also rejected claims that the government had directed Meta to completely overhaul its algorithm, calling such reports incorrect.
