A recent dance debut in Delhi offered a brief pause from the charged political atmosphere, as MPs and ministers from multiple parties attended the event.
The performance was the arangetram of Ilesha Singh, the 15-year-old second daughter of Jayant Chaudhary of the Rashtriya Lok Dal, who is currently a Union Minister of State. Chaudhary is the grandson of former Prime Minister Charan Singh, often remembered as a “leader of farmers” from Uttar Pradesh.
Though Jayant Chaudhary is part of the BJP-led alliance, he invited leaders and MPs from opposition parties as well, including the Congress and the Samajwadi Party. With the Parliament session underway, several opposition leaders were in Delhi and attended the programme.
Ilesha has been learning Kuchipudi since the age of four under noted artistes Raja and Radha Reddy. Her elder sister has also trained in Kuchipudi and has performed an arangetram earlier. Ilesha’s dance programme is expected to be held in Chennai soon.
Attendees were seen interacting cordially at the event despite sharp exchanges in Parliament, highlighting how cultural gatherings can bring political rivals together, at least for an evening.
