Hyderabad Police have issued a warning about a new cyber scam circulating on social media under the label “rent-a-boyfriend,” which they say is being used to lure young women and girls.
According to the police, the posts feature photos of attractive men and promise companionship at “discount” rates, listing packages such as coffee for an hour and movie outings with different price slabs. Some ads also claim limited-time offers, including a 50% discount tied to August 1.
In an official statement, police said these advertisements are believed to be created by cybercriminals and should not be trusted. They cautioned that relying on online chats and agreeing to meet unknown individuals in person can put victims at risk of being trapped or deceived in the name of romance.
Police also warned that scammers may collect phone numbers and personal photos during conversations and later use them to threaten victims and extort money. They said action will be taken against those responsible.
Parents were advised to stay alert about what minors view on social media, who they communicate with, and whom they meet outside. Anyone who encounters suspicious posts or becomes a victim has been asked to call the cybercrime helpline 1930 or file a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in.
