Tamil Nadu’s Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department has issued fresh instructions to tighten the existing restrictions on mobile phone use inside temples. Commissioner Vinay said that from September 1, devotees will not be allowed to carry mobile phones into major temples.
As per the order, temples must display prominent boards at entrances and outside the premises stating that mobile phone use is prohibited, and make announcements through public address systems. To help devotees store devices safely, temples will set up secure lockers near entry points or close to footwear counters; devotees can deposit phones and collect a receipt by paying Rs 5.
The directive follows complaints that some visitors continue to take photos, videos and “reels” and post them on social media, affecting the calm and spiritual atmosphere. The department noted that a ban on mobile phone use in temples was already in place following a Madras High Court order.
Temple executive officers have been asked to appoint staff or volunteers to collect, safeguard and return phones. In addition, sufficient personnel may be engaged on contract to monitor violations such as mobile use and unauthorised photography or videography.
The order instructs temple authorities to file police complaints against devotees who record photos or videos without permission. It also warns that if such incidents are reported in the future, strict action will be taken against the officials concerned.
