Chennai: Sources within Annamalai-led ‘We The Leaders’ say the organisation is considering a “missed call” campaign to increase its membership.
Annamalai, the former Tamil Nadu BJP president, has quit the party and is currently running ‘We The Leaders’. The group conducted anti-drug awareness programmes throughout July and is holding environmental awareness events during the current month.
Senior members said the organisation has so far enrolled about 19.47 lakh members. They added that Annamalai is firm on launching a political party only after reaching at least 50 lakh members.
According to the sources, many rural supporters and those unfamiliar with online processes are unable to sign up. The proposed missed-call initiative is aimed at reaching them.
Unlike some earlier missed-call drives run by political parties, the plan is not to auto-enrol callers. The organisation intends to contact those who give a missed call, collect their details, and then register them as members. An announcement is expected soon, the sources said.
