Kannada organisations are set to stage a protest on Monday at Attibele, on the Karnataka–Tamil Nadu border, condemning Tamil Nadu’s opposition to the proposed Mekedatu dam project.
Kannada Chalavali Vattal Party leader Vattal Nagaraj, who visited Bengaluru’s Majestic bus stand on Sunday, appealed for public participation in a statewide bandh called for August 13.
Speaking to reporters, Nagaraj alleged that the Congress government was misleading people on the issue of releasing Cauvery water. He claimed that water released from Karnataka ends up being wasted as it flows into the sea in Tamil Nadu, causing losses to Karnataka.
He also asserted that reservoirs such as KRS, Kabini, Harangi and Hemavathi were built for Karnataka’s farmers, and said the Attibele protest at 12.30 pm would be held against the Tamil Nadu government for “obstructing” the Mekedatu project.
Nagaraj warned that Tamil Nadu vehicles and people should not enter Karnataka on the day of the protest. Tamil Nadu officials said buses and other vehicles from the state would be stopped at the Attibele border and not allowed to enter Karnataka during the agitation.
