Heavy rain continued across Chennai on Saturday, affecting normal life in several neighbourhoods. The downpour that began on Friday evening persisted in areas including Nungambakkam, Valluvarkottam, Guindy, Ekkatuthangal, Saidapet, Chepauk, Kodambakkam, Vadapalani and Poonamallee.
The weather also disrupted operations at Chennai’s Meenambakkam airport and surrounding areas, where strong winds accompanied the rain. As a result, arriving flights faced delays and were unable to land on schedule.
Flights from Andaman, Delhi, Goa, Hyderabad, Tiruchirappalli and Kochi reportedly circled in the air while waiting for clearance to land. Departures from Chennai were also delayed.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s helicopter, arriving from Puducherry, was among the aircraft affected and could not land at Meenambakkam. The helicopter was instead landed at the Tambaram Air Force Station, after which he travelled by car to the Chennai airport.
