Ranchi witnessed tense scenes on Monday as students protesting alleged irregularities in state government recruitment exams marched towards the Jharkhand Assembly. Police used baton charge and fired tear gas shells after the crowd breached barricades.
The agitation, linked to allegations surrounding exams conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission, has been continuing in Ranchi since July 25 and entered its 17th day on August 10.
As the students moved closer to the Assembly, the situation escalated and the House was adjourned immediately, according to reports from the spot.
In a parallel protest, BJP leaders led by former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi staged a demonstration outside Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s residence, demanding a CBI probe into the alleged irregularities. Police detained Marandi and other BJP leaders and took them away in a van.
Meanwhile, in connection with the exam irregularities case, the CID arrested the former chairman of the state public service commission, identified as Kiyangde, and is questioning him.
