New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has appealed to opposition parties to cooperate so that the House can function smoothly, stressing that Parliament must work for democracy and for the people.
Opposition members have been staging protests in the Lok Sabha, insisting that Union Home Minister Amit Shah respond over a lathi-charge on students during a protest in Delhi.
Speaking at a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee, Birla said the people’s voice must be heard in Parliament. He urged that Question Hour be allowed to take place and that important Bills be taken up for discussion.
Emphasising constructive debate, meaningful participation and adherence to Parliament’s traditions, the Speaker called on all parties to ensure orderly proceedings so that public issues are discussed in a detailed and effective manner.
Birla said people’s problems should not be kept waiting and must be debated in the House to find solutions. He concluded with an appeal to “please cooperate” and allow the Lok Sabha to function.
