A farmer in Rajasthan’s Balotra district has been left distressed after currency notes worth Rs 5 lakh, which he had buried in his farmland, were found badly damaged by termites.
According to the report, Mangilal Meghwal from the Pachpadra area had sold his land last year for Rs 5 lakh and planned to use the money to build a room on his farm. Fearing his wife would find out, he packed the cash in a polythene cover and buried it in the soil.
Mangilal, who reportedly has a drinking habit, later forgot the exact spot where he had hidden the money. When he urgently needed funds for construction, he searched for a long time and even dug across nearly six acres, but could not locate it.
He eventually informed his wife and son, who initially doubted the claim but later joined the search. After about a year, while ploughing the field with a tractor following rainfall, the family spotted the buried bundle—only to find the Rs 500 notes heavily eaten by termites.
The family took the damaged notes to a bank in Pachpadra seeking an exchange, but bank officials declined and advised them to approach the head office in Jaipur. With uncertainty over whether the money can be recovered, the family is struggling, while a video of Mangilal weeping over the ruined notes has gone viral on social media.
