The Tamil Nadu Assembly on Monday unanimously passed a special resolution moved by Chief Minister Vijay, mandating that Tamil Thai Vazhthu be sung first at all government functions.
Speaking in the House as the session resumed after the weekend break, the Chief Minister said language is a tool of communication, but Tamil is more than that—an emotion and identity. He said Tamil represents culture, civilisation, thought and love, and that the pride of Tamil should spread across the world.
Recalling earlier steps, he noted that an order to sing Tamil Thai Vazhthu first at government events has been in force since November 23, 1970, and that it was recognised as the state song from December 17, 2021. He also referred to January 28, 2026 guidelines issued by the Union government, stating they did not include directions on state songs.
The Chief Minister said the state government had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking appropriate recognition for the state song and clear procedures for singing Tamil Thai Vazhthu at state functions. He added that the song should be compulsory at the start of events held by educational institutions, universities, government offices, public sector undertakings and other public bodies.
Leaders from different parties spoke in support, following which the resolution was adopted unanimously.
