Tamil Nadu’s petition seeking directions to Karnataka to release Cauvery water will come up for hearing in the Supreme Court on August 13.
According to the plea, the Cauvery Management Authority (CMA) had ordered Karnataka to release 3,500 cusecs of water per day to Tamil Nadu for 15 days starting July 29. Tamil Nadu has said Karnataka declined to implement the order, even as rainfall in the catchment areas has led to surplus flows reaching Tamil Nadu.
In its urgent application, the Tamil Nadu government alleged that despite adequate inflows in the current water year, Karnataka has not complied with the final award of the tribunal and the CMA’s directions, and has delayed full release citing various reasons.
Tamil Nadu has sought a direction for Karnataka to ensure that a total of 4.536 TMC is released at the rate of 3,500 cusecs from the Kabini and Krishna Raja Sagar reservoirs by August 12, and that the flow reaches the Biligundlu border point. It also requested the CMA to directly monitor inflows into Karnataka’s reservoirs once every 10 days and issue continuing directions to ensure flows at Biligundlu.
