Tamil Nadu has approved the formation of 65 special task forces to curb drug trafficking, with a financial allocation of Rs 264 crore.
The move follows Chief Minister Vijay’s announcement, made when he assumed office, that a dedicated special unit would be created in every district to tackle the drug menace. The government has now issued orders to implement the plan, and the Chief Minister is scheduled to inaugurate the task forces today.
According to the government order issued by Home Secretary Manivasan, the task forces will function under the Chief Minister’s direct control. At the state level, the anti-drug operations will be headed by an Additional Director General of Police (ADGP).
In terms of deployment, 37 task forces will be set up across districts, while Chennai will have 12 units. Two units each will be established in Avadi, Tambaram, Salem, Coimbatore, Tirupathur, Tiruchirappalli, Madurai and Tirunelveli.
To staff the new units, the government has created posts for 65 inspectors, 260 sub-inspectors and 1,300 police personnel. Each task force will include one inspector, four sub-inspectors and 20 police personnel, with the headquarters operating under the ADGP’s leadership.
