A landslide incident in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar area claimed six lives early on August 12, after a huge boulder rolled down from a hillside and crashed into three houses in Chirag Nagar.
Residents who were asleep were trapped under the debris as the homes were buried. Rescue teams rushed to the spot and carried out prolonged operations to pull people out from the rubble.
Six persons were rescued and taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared them dead. The deceased have been identified as Mohammed Sameer Ansari (14), Sahil Husein Abdul Gazi (19), Aban Arif Shaikh (2), Manat Arif Shaikh (4) and Marjina Arif Shaikh (27). The identity of one more victim is yet to be confirmed.
Four people sustained serious injuries and are undergoing treatment in hospital. The state government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 3 lakh each for the families of the deceased, while search and rescue efforts continue for anyone who may still be trapped.
